After several decades of intense cultivation and selection, the trees have adapted to Chinese soil. The important pomegranate production areas in China are in Sichuan, Yunnan, and Henan. Yunnan production areas are generally located at an elevation of 1500 meters or more. In addition, the production areas are relatively far to the south, which means that the fruit matures early and enters the market earlier than similar fruits from different production areas. Packaged pomegranates from Sichuan and Yunnan are relatively expensive. Henan pomegranates are generally not packaged and enter the market in late September. Their price is relatively low. As for flavor, the Yunnan and Henan pomegranates are relatively sweet, in particular the 'Tunisian soft seed pomegranate', which gets even sweeter later in the season.
