Turkey: Sharp increase in prices of onion and potatoes

Turkish customers are growing more and more frustrated with the recent spike in the prices of onion and potatoes, two mainstays of the Turkish dinner tables. Even though it is right in the middle of the harvest season, the prices of potatoes and onions have almost doubled within a matter of few weeks. Both products were sold for around 0.5 USD per kg recently at retail but nowadays both are sold at 1 USD per kg.

Both products are especially vital for low income family dinner tables and this increase hit them very hard.

Some of the consumers claimed that the increases in these prices are connected to the increase of petroleum prices. The Sectoral association noted that the recent spike might be related to the upcoming holiday season and that they expect the prices to return to their normal level soon.
