Peru is one of the main exporters of avocados for the United Kingdom. In fact, last year, the country placed 24.6 million kilos of this fruit in England for a value of US $ 57 million. The fruit was sold in fresh or dried formats.
However, the European nation is becoming interested in a new trend: frozen, peeled, pitted, and washed fresh avocados.
This presentation, which according to a report of the Mintel market agency, is gaining traction, comes from crops from the Nayarit Provence region on the Pacific coast of Mexico.
To produce it, Mexican manufacturers are using a revolutionary freezing technology that allows keeping the fruit in this state from the inside out, which helps to preserve its freshness, texture, aroma, and color characteristics.
The product is presented in a flexible plastic bag with decorative flexographic impressions. The packaging is transparent so that consumers can seethe good state of the avocados. The product is sold in a package that contains eight halves of avocado (460 grams) for US $4.83.
The producers of this innovation said that it is suitable for vegetarians and those who seek to save time by having avocados that are already peeled and pitted.
Although the frozen fruit market in Europe represents only 1% of the sales of frozen products in that continent, (i.e. 230 million of 23,000 million euro) it is not a minor item, stated Tom De Preter, an entrepreneur in the food sector.
According to the Euromonitor website, frozen fruit sales are expected to amount to 16 million pounds sterling and to grow by 6.1%.
"In the United Kingdom, consumers respond positively to advertising and will decide what to purchase based on any advantage they notice on the products, such as quality, design, brand, price, or ethical certifications. It is important to have an excellent post-sales service, as the British don't hesitate to claim and defend their rights," the report from Mintel adds.
According to the report the biggest suppliers of avocados for the United Kingdom are Peru, Chile, Israel, Spain, and South Africa.
