China improves conditions for the export of the Italian kiwifruit

ICE (a Governmental Organization promoting the internationalization of Italian companies) has played a major role in coordinating negotiations between the Italian and Chinese markets. Following the approval of the Ministry of Economic Development, as part of a special loan intended to facilitate and encourage sanitary and phytosanitary inspection missions necessary for the opening of markets where non-tariff barriers are applied to the export of Italian food products, Italy will also be able to apply cold treatment to kiwis before they are shipped to China.

The local authorities have published the list of establishments authorized to perform cold treatment on kiwis in stock before they are exported. Click here to access the list.

This represents an important success for Italian exporters, which has been primarily achieved thanks to the confidence gained in these ten years of shipments to China that have never been rejected.

Therefore, as of the next campaign, it will be possible for Italian producers to carry out cold treatment on their products even before they are shipped. This will of course diminish the export procedures that previously required cold treatment to be carried out upon arrival and receipt of the goods. Exports of kiwis from Italian companies to China will now be facilitated.

"Considering the trust we have earned in these ten years of exporting kiwis to China it is now fundamental that Italian exporting companies comply with the requirements for cold treatment (such as the number of probes required, their positioning and the required registrations), so as to be able to confirm and consolidate the trust of the authorities" stated Simona Rubbi, manager of International Relations and emerging markets at CSO Italy.

Being able to cold-treat kiwis before they are exported can facilitate shipments by air or by train, exploiting the great potential of the opening of the railway line that traces the Silk Road.

Italian kiwi exports to China have exceeded 13,000 tons annually and this trend is espected to grow with time. These great results have been achieved thanks to the success of the coordinated work between ICE, Ministry, CSO Italy and the Regional Phytosanitary Services.

The next objective is the publication of the list of authorized citrus warehouses. However, the Chinese authorities have indicated that this will take some time, considering that a few amendments to the protocol have been requested by Italy (including the request for shipment via air) which are currently being assessed by the Chinese authorities.

Obtaining the green light on the shipment of citruses as well seems now to be an achievable objective.
