All over the German Republic, drupes of all kinds are currently getting all the attention at Frischezentrum Frankfurt. Although the majority of these fruits currently comes out France, Spain and Italy, there are other regions of origin as well. Due to the limited quantities available in the countries of origin, as well as its unique types and varieties, Turkey is more and more often becoming an excellent alternative for drupes. ''Certainly the sweet apricots are very good,'' says Saygin Cali, buyer and seller for Frankfurt wholesaler Helin GmbH.
The sweet apricots in the wholesaler's range have come straight from the specialized growing region of Malatya , in south-eastern Turkey, according to Mr. Cali. "This is the peak season and these Turkish drupes will be on offer until the end of August. Although the Turkish products are smaller than the Spanish or French varieties, the taste is incomparable and clearly much sweeter.''
European grape imports
Parallel to the drupe season, the wholesale company is currently also busy marketing European Grape varieties, one of the main products of Helin GmbH. For about two weeks, the Italian 'Victoria' and 'Black Magic' varieties are on offer, primarily coming from Sicily, said Mr. Cali. “For many years we have been working with production companies, all over Europe. Because of that are we able to offer our customers European grapes continuously."
The two main varieties in the current range of the firm: the Black Magic is a dark variety with a high level of Brix and small seeds. The Victoria is a seeded grape with large fruits
Within a few weeks, the Frankfurt-based company is expected get its goods from other areas than Italy. ''From mid-July we will switch to seedless goods from Moldova. After that, we will continue with products from Greece: the Thompson and Sultana varieties. At the end of the season seedless goods from Turkey will come around and the Sultana variety as well,'' Mr. Cali says.
