Arugula strengthening position in the 'power green' category
Arugula producers are experiencing a perfect start to summer as the crop enters peak volume. Weather conditions have been favorable, which is helping to keep a steady stream of supplies going.
"Arugula supplies are going very strong right now as we enter the peak of the season," said Ken Horwitz of The Salad Farm. "Supplies are typically strong at this time of year and they usually remain strong up until August. Kale on the other hand, has begun to slow down a little."
Strong demand is helping to push arugula into a strong position in the market, as it demonstrates excellent growth. Consumers are increasingly adding the green to smoothies in addition to salads. Shippers are also noticing a strong pull from the foodservice sector.
"Demand for arugula has always been good, but it has been especially high more recently," Horwitz noted. "Kale demand, for example, is remaining steady while arugula is enjoying strong growth in the order of five to ten percent. It has been used as a valuable addition to salads. Now though it is becoming more of a power green product, with consumers increasingly adding it to smoothies and other drinks."
"The Salad Farm is primarily a value added supplier, especially to the foodservice sector, where we have seen good demand for arugula," he added. "We are able to offer 3lb and 4lb packs to foodservice customers."
New retail packs on the horizon
The Salad Farm is looking to launch a number of new retail clamshell packs in various sizes. They are hoping to have them ready in time for the Organic Produce Summit next month in Monterey, California. In addition to these, the company will have their green blends on display at the show, including arugula.
"It will be The Salad Farm's second year at the Organic Produce Summit. We will have all our organic leafy green products on display at the Organic Produce Summit, including arugula, kale, spinach and also our spring mix," Horwitz shared. "We are currently in the process of installing new packing equipment and are hopeful that we are able to present our new retail clamshell packs at the show as well. They will comprise of 5oz and 10oz packs of our greens, especially designed for retail. We will also be expanding on the smaller foodservice packs which present our foodservice customers with greater options for keeping their produce fresher."
