First lots at wholesalers approximately one week earlier than usual

'First plums from local orchards available'

The season of domestic fruits is currently picking up speed. While regional berries and sweet cherries hit the market in large quantities, the plums are also ready to go this week. Usually, the season starts in the last week of June at the earliest. Augsburg wholesaler Fruchthof Ehinger, however, has already marketed the first lots of the early Ruth Gerstetter variety.

Normally, the Bavarian wholesaler is still fully occupied by Italian products at this time of year. Then, domestic products are successively coming on by the end of June or the start of July. This means that the first products from the Palatinate are in the Augsburg warehouses about a week earlier than usual, according to marketer Hansjörg Erlinger. ''The first products of the 'Ruth Gerstetter' variety look very good and they are very firm. However, the season really starts in the middle of July and then we will have the even tastier, late varieties in our range.''

Peak season
The kilo price of the first lots is currently very high. According to Erlinger, this will gradually decrease depending on availability and will be halved by mid-July. Due to the price situation and the large number of other summer fruits, demand is currently still low. "Melons, stone fruits and more is currently available in the market. From late July until September, plums are always very much in demand. This actually is the main season.''

In addition to the local fruits, the wholesaler is currently also marketing a large numbers of stone fruits from southern Europe. Apricots are currently an absolute hit within their range, says Erlinger. "We started out with French products, but then switched to Italian because of the quality. Otherwise, we are very strong in tomatoes from regional greenhouses, such as those in the Nuremberg area and the island of Reichenau. The regional vine tomatoes in particular are very much in demand."
