Billa Gardens:

Billa Bulgaria protecting consumers and the environment

Billa Bulgaria has announced a long term project called 'Billa Gardens', a company brand which has been implemented so that consumers can have better access to Bulgarian grown fresh fruits and vegetables, which have reduced, or are completely free of pesticide residue.

"Our program ensures that the products we offer have significantly decreased amounts, or are completely free of pesticide residues. This means that we are offering not only healthier food, but that we are also protecting the environment and are providing better working conditions for fruit and vegetable producers."

One hundred and fifty fruit orchards and vegetable open field and greenhouse producers, located all around Bulgaria, participate in the program. All of the products with the Billa Gardens brand are selected at the very early stages by varieties and seeds and are followed up throughout the growing process by Billa experts who monitor the process from planting to packing, and also transport to storage.

Billa publishes the weekly lab results for each of their products on the company website. The company uses a stop light system to rate the tested products; a green light meets the strict criteria in the Billa program, yellow means that it complies with legal regulations but doesn't meet Billa's standards and a red light means that it doesn't comply with legal regulations and the product is taken off the shelves and no longer sold.

"We are happy to have the opportunity to build the BILLA Gardens project through the Pesticide Reduction Program and our new own brand. I would also like to thank all the Bulgarian producers, with whom we have been cooperating for many years in the framework of the project. We will continue to support them and help them position themselves in the market and develop their business, "said Boyko Sachanski, Manager of BILLA Bulgaria.
