Leon van den Hombergh, Frankort&Koning:

"Usually a little less demand for papaya in the summer"

"The strikes in Brazil have really disrupted the supply of papaya. There are no 'plane papayas', and the papayas that came by ship sell quickly. This means the supply needs to get going again soon", Leon van den Hombergh, Dutch wholesaler, Frankort&Koning's, Commerical Director says. "The consumption of papayas has been excellent over the past few weeks. Traditionally, though, it drops in the summer months."

"We do see that papaya sales have taken great strides over the years. The public-at-large is becoming more familiar with this exotic fruit. Both retailers and those in the food service like to work with them. Papaya shipments also 'piggyback' on the melon ships. This keeps the costs for buyers down", says Leon.

European growers, in particular, those from Spain, see their opportunity. They are increasingly seeking sales in Europe. "In principle, Brazil can produce papayas year-round. Usually, the demand decreases in July and August. This drop is because of the competition from other summer fruit. The shelves are filled again in mid-September. This is when the new Brazilian season starts", concludes Leon.
