Stored apples at the lowest level, imports increasing

Austrian dessert apples are almost all marketed and now there are large gaps on the domestic fruit shelves. While marketers are clearing their warehouses of the last batches of Golden Delicious, Gala and Idared, varieties such as Kronprinz, Jonagold and Topaz have been long gone already.

The Styrian apple stores looked like this on May 1st: Golden Delicious (13.5 t) Gala (4 t) Idared (1.9 t). The prices for perfect stored goods Kl. I were on average 40% above last year's level. Free shelf room was increasingly filled with imports such as Italian Granny Smith, Pink Lady, New Zealand Royal Gala, Braeburn and Argentine Fuji.
