New potatoes from Puglia

The new potato situation is rather satisfying this year. "The frost in late February did not affect Sicily, meaning the season over there started two months early (late March). This way, there were no overlaps with Puglia, which was affected by frost in late March which delayed ripening," explains Cosimo Leggiero, sales manager for Miss Freschezza.

"As we don't have to rush harvesting, we can carry out operations according to market demands. Prices hover between €0.55 and €0.65 depending on grade and variety."

"Our main cultivar is Spunta, produced in Monopoli, Fasano and Polignano a Mare mainly on red soil land. The production area, soil quality and hand processing means the produce is appealing and excellent to eat."

The main sales channels are retail chains, foreign distributors (mainly in France) and general markets in central and northern Italy. "Our 4 kg crate holds our best selection. A flyer illustrates the history of the area as well as the production method and characteristics of the produce."
