On a cherry orchard with 6600 plants per hectare protective nets are essential

Superb fields of 6600 plants per hectare: With the intent of showing the productivity of such plants, Salvi Vivai organized a technical day open to farmers, technicians and operators in the sector on Thursday, June 7, 2018, at the experimental location in the municipal territory of Portomaggiore (in the province of Ferrara).

"We have brought together many people from different countries, including Russia, Turkey, Serbia, but also Greece, France and Moldova" reported Silvia Salvi, a managing partner of Salvi Vivai. "Cherry tree cultivations are expanding more and more in Eastern Europe and the market demands a product of good caliber with excellent organoleptic quality. These plants guarantee the protection of the cherries and an easy harvest, avoiding the use of ladders".

In detail, the rootstock which is used is the Gisela 5 nanoscale. The plant measures 3 meters between the rows and 1 meter or 50 centimeters on the row. If the size is of 50 cm, the number of plants per hectare is equal to 6667, whereas with a distance of 1 meter there are 3333 plants per hectare. Thanks to the small size, the cherries are easily collected in one go without the use of ladders.

The monofilament cover reaches the ground and is characterized by a cloth located on the upper part which is rainproof, it protects from hail and the mesh is so tight as to avoid the entry of Drosophila suzukii. "So far this year only one treatment against D. suzukii was executed and, thanks to the nets reaching the ground, there have been no attacks. Due to the wet climate, the other treatments which needed to be carried out were against the Monilia fungus. To carry out an effective coverage, we have selected a tractor which runs at the rate of4.5 km / h", says the technician Jacopo Diamanti. The nets also prevent the entry of the Asian bug.

To protect the crops it is essential to make use of the nets and sheets. For example, recently the area was struck by a heavy rainfall of 50 mm of rain in an hour: had there been no sheets nor protective nets, the cherries would not have survived and would have cracked.

For the past 5 years Salvi Vivai, in collaboration with the University of Bologna, has been studying and developing a specific new variety of cherry, namely the "Sweet". Below is a list of the cherry varieties which were the protagonists of the technical day: Sweet Aryana® PA1UNIBO* (developed 3 days after "Burlat", translator's note, a variety of cherry), Sweet Lorenz® PA2UNIBO* (+6 days), Sweet Gabriel® PA3UNIBO* (+10 days), Sweet Valina® PA4UNIBO*(+20 days), Sweet Saretta® PA5UNIBO* (+23) and Sweet Stephany® PA7UNIBO*(+27 days). These 6 varieties have been patented by the University of Bologna.

"The collaboration between Salvi Vivai and the University of Bologna is an important partnership that has allowed us to achieve very important results both of academic and commercial value", says Stefano Lugli, project manager of the Department of Food and Agricultural Science and Technology of the University of Bologna.

The great novelty of the experimentation of the "Sweet" variety lies in the choice and the study of very similar varieties which resemble the "Sweet" variety in terms of flavour, colour, hardness and shape. Furthermore, another very similar yet very important feature is that the fruit matures and is harvested within the timeframe of 5 weeks.
