China: Relaxed trade policies make imported fruit more popular

Dragon fruit, pineapple, mango, durian, Chinese cherries ... when the summer arrives, these are the fruits consumers want, as well as the fresh imports which have recently hit the market.

The popularity of imported fruits is evidenced by the statistics of customs. According to staff at the Ningbo customs, from January to April, Ningbo has imported 2,198 tons of fruits, which are worth 13 billion Yuan - a year-on-year growth of 1.3 to 1.7%. The statistics of Xiamen customs also shows that the imported fruits of this year weigh 43 thousand tons, a sharp increase of 45%, compared to the same period of last year.

Whether its in supermarkets or at online stores, the imported fruits are hitting the Chinese market. An industry insider believes this has been caused by multiple factors: firstly, as living standards rise, the consumption potential has been released. Secondly, China has enlarged the range and depth of the its import policy, which is beneficial for the import of fruits. Thirdly, as more free-trade agreements have come into effect, it will be more convenient to import foreign fruits. Fourthly, tariff-reducing solutions benefit the consumption of imported fruits. Fifthly, as the number of imported fruits increased, the price dropped, which again stimulates the demand of imported fruits.
