US, Spain, and Mexico account for 40% of Peruvian pepper exports

The United States, Spain and Mexico concentrate 40% of the total shipments of Peruvian capsicum (chillies and peppers), which in the first four months of 2018 amounted to US $77.5 million.

This is 1% higher than in the same period of 2017 (US $ 76.5 million), according to the manager of Agricultural exports of the Association of Exporters (Adex), Paula Carrion, who added that the country also exported its capsicum to Germany, Argentina, Puerto Rico, Belgium, United Kingdom, Canada, and Chile.

So far this year, she stated, canned capsicum exports accounted for 61% of capsicum exports, and had an 8% growth over the same period last year. Exports of whole capsicum accounted for 27% of exports, and contracted 9%; while frozen capsicum accounted for the remaining 3%, despite having a 70% increase. The other presentations accounted for the remaining 9%.

The total ranking was led by paprika. Piquillo, bell, cherry, jalapeño and guajillo peppers also stood out. Carrión highlighted the shipment of Peruvian native peppers to the world, among which the yellow, rocoto, panca, escabeche, and charapita peppers stand out.
