Data from market analysis company IndexBox shows that the world's largest consumers of strawberries are China (41%), the USA (16%), Egypt (5%), Turkey (4%), Mexico (4%), and Germany (3%). Together they account for 73% of global strawberry consumption.
The largest growth of strawberry consumption between 2007 and 2016 took place in Mexico (+12.7%), Egypt (+12.2%), and China (+8.3%). China's share of global strawberry consumption is growing fast. China showed a substantial growth of 9% over the period 2007 to 2016. Mexico and Egypt have also expanded their share of global strawberry consumption in the last ten years.
China is a large country in strawberry production. China produced 3.8 million tons of strawberries in 2016, which is 42% of the global strawberry production volume. Other primary strawberry producing countries are the USA (16%), Mexico and Egypt (5% each), and Turkey and Spain (4% each).
Spain, the USA, Mexico and The Netherlands are responsible for 70% of global strawberry export. The global strawberry export volume reached 86 thousand tons in 2016 and has shown a steady growth in the last few years, especially between 2007 and 2011. In 2012 the global export volume of strawberries suddenly increased by 18% and has fluctuated mildly until 2016.
