Novel lettuces for Paraguayan consumers

The Fresh Food SRL company wants to offer the local market a wider variety of fruits, vegetables and fresh products, which is why they've ventured into the hydroponic culture with the Dutch salanova lettuce variety.

Naoki Nagaoka, the owner of the company said that the idea was to offer consumers a novel product in ready for consumption special packaging.

"We've been producing this new lettuce variety for a while now, the idea is to start with this variety and then expand the range with different types of fresh leaves," he said.

Fresh Food SRL is characterized by extensive production in its own farms in the areas of Capiatá, San Lorenzo, Villeta, Paraguari, where they started implementing hydroponic production three years ago and now have nine varieties; 100 banks with a production capacity of about 50,000 plants per month of lettuce, arugula, and chard, he added.

They will soon start marketing the salanova lettuce, which is a gourmet variety, in the main supermarket chains and delicatessens.

Nagaoka said that each plant had approximately 80 leaves, and that when they were pulled out and cut, they all had a similar size. In addition, he said they were receiving special packaging for the processing and packaging of leaves, which will ensure safe consumption and allow consumers to better enjoy this variety's tender and pleasant flavor.
