Watermelons smashed to pieces

China: Areas of Shandong suffer from egg-sized hailstones

The weather in Shandong turned quickly in the afternoon of June 13th, 2018. Dark clouds rolled in on strong winds. Ji'nan, Weifang, Zibo, and Binzhou all suffered from thunder storms and torrential rains, as well as hailstones between 2-3 cm. The largest fell in Jiyang and measured 4 cm. The hailstorm lasted for as much as half an hour in some areas.

Hanting in Weifang suffered from hailstones that measured 3-4 cm. Watermelons were smashed to pieces by the hailstones. Other areas suffered from smaller hailstones, about one cm in diameter. This is the season when watermelons, cucumbers, and eggplants enter the market, while apples are ripening. This hailstorm affected both the quality and the production volume of fruit.
