Michael Wilde (Eosta):

"World Cup tomato deal a hit"

Just as in previous football European and World Cups, Eosta has brought out a special World Cup packaging with the organic tomatoes of Frank de Koning from Brielle in the colours of the national teams. "An offer with orange tomatoes wasn't on the cards this year due to the absence of the Dutch national team, but the black, red and yellow tomatoes are doing very well in Germany. Our customers Alnatura and Bio Company are fully on board," says sustainability manager Michaël Wilde.

"Frank de Koning has seventeen different types of tomatoes, so we can always play around with the varieties we're packaging. We're hoping Germany remains in the tournament for a while now. Although, with these tomatoes we could switch to a Belgian customer. Sweden is a very important market for us, but unfortunately we don't have blue tomatoes yet," laughs Michaël. The offer is going well. "We are selling considerably more tomatoes. I expected organic consumers to be slightly less sensitive to this, but apparently people are just as crazy during football tournaments outside of the Netherlands."

New this year is that the packaging is made of sugar reed and the foil of organic plastic. "In the past year there has been a massive counter movement towards the use of plastic packaging. This is why I'm happy that we have a sustainable answer to this with this packaging, citing the organic cultivation," according to Michaël. The German customers are charmed by the World Cup offer at least."
