Styrian Apples:

Austria: Estimated harvest of 180,000 tons

Apple farmers in Styria are hoping for a good harvest this year. They estimate the yield as being 180,000 tons, which is a very satisfactory result after two frost-plagued years, with 40,000 tons in 2016 and 70,000 tons in 2017.

Orchard Manager Wolfgang Mazelle told orf.at that from an average harvest, about 50 percent of the Styrian apples are destined for export. Due to the smaller volumes of last year, however, export demands could not be met. That made it difficult to keep their clients interested. Therefore it will be about time to start supplying them again.

About price developments, nothing useful can be said, because this is internationally controlled. In Styria, the Gala is currently the most cultivated variety.
