Analysts: market will remain weak

China: Slight recovery in leek price

Sannong Zhongguo reported that the leek price has been depressed since the beginning of May. In general, leeks begins to flower every year between March and May, and the quality subsequently drops. It is therefore common for the price to drop as well during this period. However, the reason for the depressed market conditions this year is different.

The price of leeks rose after a long period of depression. The current price of Shandong leek is 0.50 yuan [0.08 USD] per 0.5 kg, which is an increase of 0.20 yuan [0.03 USD] or 66.67% in comparison with mid- to late May. This price increase is related to the supply volume on the market.

As the price of leeks gradually increases, so does the pressure on product supply to markets in retail areas. Production areas currently have quantity but not quality. Most of the good products are gathered in Anqiu. The trade price is high. Even though product suppliers have transported leeks with much enthusiasm lately, the quality of leeks on the market in retail areas is not great. The supply is abundant, and good-quality products sell relatively quickly, but the remainder is under great pressure. Many markets suffer from excessive supply. Now that the temperatures have increased, leek becomes more difficult to store, and quality is difficult to guarantee. A lot is sold at low prices, and still some traders are left with unmarketable leeks.
