"Currently we still have Turkish and Spanish cherries in our range: however, the local produce is ready for picking and we expect it at the end of the week," says a local sales manager.
Following their colleagues in the southern part of Germany, who usually kick off their season a little earlier, the Oldenburg carrots are currently coming up.
Regional supply of fresh goods
The Oldenburger wholesale area is a small trading center on the outskirts of Oldenburg and it has several regional fresh produce suppliers. The resident trading companies focus primarily on the regional market and supply mainly to gastronomers, as well as retail stores and resellers. The goods are sourced as much as possible from regional growers, including the Papenburg horticultural center and the producer's hypermarket Langförden (ELO). Also, a variety of tomato varieties are available from Holland. Until a few years ago, there was a Mios cash and carry market directly at the wholesale market area. At the end of 2014, however, this consumer market was closed.
