Turkey: Extra measures taken to improve the quality of figs in Aydin

Fig production is one of the main sources of income for Aydin, a city located in southwestern Turkey. Currently the city’s Food, Agriculture and Breeding Directorate is starting to take extra measures to maintain and improve the quality of the products.

Aydin is responsible for 62 % of the fig production in Turkey with its 6.2 million fig trees and 185,000 tons of production capacity. The measures taken by the directorate include the prevention of the sale of figs with diseases and stopping the harvesting of figs before the right harvest time. The growers who do not comply with these measures will be fined and all growers will be inspected regularly and vigorously by the directorate officials.
