Italy: High-quality Tarocco oranges

"If all oranges had such a balance between Brix level and acidity, the sector would suffer less," explains Daniele Di Mauro, owner of a stand at the Cesena market when talking about late Tarocco varieties.

Late Tarocco crates

"Oranges are grown in the Catania province by F.lli Sampugnaro. Harvesting started a few days ago and will continue throughout June. Expected production is 40 tons."

The light colour and fresh appearance of the stem testifies that fruit has been harvested just a couple of days earlier

"These oranges are demanded particularly by bars, restaurants and H&R businesses which use them for juice or in cocktails. It's not easy to find Italian oranges at this time of year so the alternative is imported produce."

These oranges are characterised by a high Brix level, perfectly balanced with acidity. The colour has red hues and grades are average. Wholesale prices varies between €0.90 and €1.20/kg depending on grade.
