China: Yangjiang lychees increase online sales

Yangjiang lychees had a bumper harvest this year. The production volume of Concubine's Smile, one of the varieties that entered the market, increased by 30% in comparison with last production season. The current purchase price is around 5-6 yuan [0.78-0.94 USD] per kg. Yangjiang lychees have not yet encountered retail difficulties. The Guilin Flavor variety, which is more sensitive to increased temperatures, encountered retail difficulties last year. This year, however, there is plenty of fruit on the trees and the increased production is obvious. These lychees are expected to enter the market in the middle of June. The lychee harvest this year exceeds last year in quantity and quality. The fruit is larger and sweeter.

The supply season will be slightly shorter this year in comparison with last year: White-Sugar Pouch entered the market between mid-May and late May; Concubine's Smile entered the market between late May and mid-June; Guilin Flavor will enter the market between early to mid-June and late June; Jade Pouch will enter the market in late June. Online trade platforms have begun to play a key role in lychee sales in recent years. Yangjiang lychees have benefited from increased quantity and increased quality, which has boosted online sales.
