Polish consumers not ready for ready-to-eat avocados

Demand for avocados continues to grow in Poland, and Agnieszka Arcimowicz from importer/exporter Targban said that this was the first year that the company started sourcing the exotic fruits directly from a Kenyan producer instead of via the Netherlands.

"We have been buying the Fuerte variety directly from a Kenyan company and we couldn't be more pleased with the great quality they have been sending us. They are so professional and really seemed to have gone the extra effort for us," said Agnieszka.

"For some reason, we see that growth in demand for both mangoes and avocados seem to be going head to head and have doubled in the last few years. More and more consumers are getting more familiar with them, although they are not yet ready for ready to eat and prefer to buy their avocados while they are still unripe. Our supplier had offered to send us ready to eat avocados by air which have been ripened on the tree, which are much tastier, with a shelf of 1 to 2 weeks, but it is too soon for consumers to pay a premium price for that," Agnieszka informed.

Avocado prices were high up to week 18, with good quality supplies coming primarily from Peru, but prices dropped by almost 40% with the start of supply from Kenya. Agnieszka said that fortunately the supermarkets in Poland are still paying good prices for avocados, and the prices are expected to rise again this week.

"We see a really positive future for avocado sales here and have had a lot of requests. We are selling an average of 1600 boxes per week," confirms Agnieszka.
