China: Price of leeks stays low

The price of leeks has maintained its low position in recent days. Market supply is slow, and dealers mostly "sell when it is convenient". The current supply of leeks on the Beijing Market mainly comes from production areas in Shandong in the north, with a supplementary supply from Fujian in the south. The harvest season of leeks in Shandong is well under way, while leeks from Shanghai and Zhejiang are currently leaving the market.

Leek production areas have undergone continuous expansion in recent years, with the exception of production areas in Jiangsu. Many areas also have scattered leek plantations, so that the market supply of leek is in constant fluctuation. However, the overall market condition is one where supply exceeds demand. That is the main reason that the price of leeks is currently at such a low level. The retail market does not have a shortage of leeks, which puts a lot of pressure on retail. In addition, leeks becomes more difficult to store when the weather grows warmer. Many visiting traders buy small volumes of leeks based on demand. The trade volume is not large.
