Taiwanese fruit takes collective dive

The price of Taiwanese fruit dropped this summer. Specialists state that the lack of a rainy season with low temperatures caused bumper harvests for many kinds of fruit. Watermelons in particular have enjoyed a great production season and they push aside other fruits in the market.

Taiwanese bananas and pineapples also have excessive production volumes and the price has fallen as a result. Even though the production season of east Taiwan is later than the production season of west Taiwan, the current price of pineapples in production areas has already fallen to around 6 NTD [0.20 USD] per kg. Farmers have found it impossible to recover their cost price, considering that the price of pineapples was more than 10 NTD [0.34 USD] last year, and the price of bananas was 15-19 NTD [0.50-0.64 USD].

Fruit prices have gone down all around the globe. For example, Malaysia has joined the Philippines, Costa Rica, and Taiwan as the pineapple supplier for the Chinese market, and since the cost price of pineapples is higher in Taiwan than in the other areas, mainland Chinese traders prefer to purchase pineapples from other areas.
