Honduras: Banana exports generated 5.4% less income in the first quarter

According to an official source, revenue from Honduran banana exports in the first quarter of 2018 was 5.4 percent lower than in the same period of 2017 and amounted to 127.3 million dollars.

The Central Bank of the country stated in its report on Foreign Trade in General Merchandise that banana sales were 7.3 million dollars lower than the 134.6 million dollars achieved in the first quarter of 2017.

According to the report, between January and March, the Central American country exported 6,872 boxes of 18 kilos of bananas abroad, i.e. 20.9 percent less than the 8,697 boxes it shipped out in the first quarter of 2017.

The Central Bank said that the decrease in the export volume was due to the strike carried out by some 2,800 workers of one of the banana companies between the end of 2017 and March 2018, which affected the production in some of the farms.

The average price of a box of bananas stood at $ 18.53, i.e. 19.7 percent higher than in the same period of 2017, when it stood at $15.47, according to the Honduran agency.

The United States was the main destination for Honduran banana exports, as that market bought 6,565 boxes (95.5 percent) of the total fruit sold.

According to data from the Central Bank of the country, in 2017, Honduran bananas exports amounted to 522.7 million dollars.
