Avocados attract followers in China

The rage for avocados has arrived in China. According to trade statistics from Comtrade, Chinese avocado imports have increased from 25 tons in 2006 to 1.9 million tons in 2010. Initially it was an unknown product for most Chinese. However, its growing appearance in a variety of restaurants, especially in the most reputable cities, in addition to the increase in people's travels, has changed this fruit's fate in this destination.

The avocado, which in China is known as the Butter fruit, is gradually being used more and more in restaurants and menus, to the point that it is even being promoted in fast food chains. Last year, the KFC franchise launched a limited edition menu that included the Avocado Zinger Burger and the Avocado Twister. In addition, Taco Bell, a chain that uses avocado in its menu, has also expanded its footprint in China. Being present in these menus has helped to increase the Chinese consumers' level of familiarity with this fruit, encouraging them to also consume it in their homes.

According to the market intelligence agency Mintel, ready to eat avocados which are conveniently packaged, would encourage more Chinese consumers to make purchases. In the past, a lack of familiarity with the fruit's ripening process might have discouraged buyers. Now, the new ready-to-eat packages include suggestions for properly serving the food as well as recipes.

In addition, spending on food and beverages for snacks is increasing in China. According to a research from Mintel, 13% of consumer spending in 2017 corresponded to snacks. The Butter Fruit could be attractive in this area, especially because Japan - a market that China often pays attention to in search of innovation - is the home of great brands that offer avocado based snacks.

Due to all these factors, the consultant suggests that manufacturers take advantage of the interest in avocados by introducing products that allow consumers to enjoy this product in their homes. In addition, the avocado can be promoted as a healthy fruit that contains healthy fats.
