Turkey: 30,000 tons of melons produced in Manisa

Melons in Kirkagac, Manisa, a town well known for its tasty melon production, are planted in an area of 100 million square feet and the target production is estimated to be 30,000 tons this season.

The harvest season is expected to start around August and the expectation is for around 3 tons per 10,000 square feet.

Kirkagac Chamber of Agriculture Chairman Emin Ozari: “Planting took place in late April and early May. Now we continue with the weeding process which will be followed by irrigation until the first week of August. Then we will start harvesting our products and start sending it to local markets.

There are right now some melons in the market that are sold as “Kirkagac” melons which is misleading and false. Even though the shapes of these melons look similar, original Kirkagac melons are still in the fields waiting for harvesting. These fake “Kirkagac” melons taste much worse than the real one’s. Our melons are mostly sold in local markets, mainly in big cities such as Istanbul, Ankara and Izmir, however we also export a lot of melons to Germany.”
