Turkey: Hailstorm damages grapevines in Manisa

The hailstorm which hit the towns of Sarigol and Alasehir, in Manisa caused significant damage in grapevines in the area. The growers started to work diligently to control the extent of the damage but first reports indicate that the damage is more extensive in Sarigol.

Agricultural Department officials started working in both towns to find out how much of the produce will be lost.

Sukru Demir, a grape grower from Sarigol: “The hailstorm hurt my grapevines a lot but thankfully I had insurance against hailstorm so I can recover some of my losses at the very least.”

Sarigol Chamber of Agriculture Chairman Ali Ihsan Ulgen: “Right now we are working at full speed to document the damages and to make sure the growers who were insured can claim from the insurance companies. The growers in this region grow grapes not for raisin production but for fresh consumption, therefore the quality of the product is very important, which is why this hailstorm hurt our growers even more. The growers were already dissatisfied with the volume of products they were going to receive this year and now with this disaster, they are devastated.”
