China: Shandong veg prices decline

With the gradual increase of temperatures in the early summer, vegetables have entered a period of a rapid growth. A large number of fresh local vegetables have arrived at the markets, while the prices in the farmers' market in Mengyin County of Shandong Province have generally decreased.

There are three main reasons that have led to the decline in the prices. Firstly, the weather was constantly hot, which provided favorable conditions for the growth of vegetables. The production increased and in the end, the supply of the fresh vegetables have exceeded market demand. Secondly, hot weather makes veggies vulnerable to rot, it's difficult to store them. Thirdly, the leafy vegetables that were cultivated in greenhouses are replaced by the ones that are growing on the open air, which is much cheaper.

It is expected that with the further increase of temperatures, vegetable production in Mengyin County will enter the peak season, and the market will have sufficient supply. Plenty of varieties will arrive on the market, while the overall level of the prices will continue to decline.
