Cees Bruyn, Staay Food Group:

"Plenty of space for Egyptian red onions"

At Staay Food Group in the Netherlands, the season kicked off in mid-May with Egyptian red onions. "Dutch red onion stocks are at an end. So, there is plenty of space on the market for Egyptian red onions", says Cees Bruyn. The crop in Egypt was somewhat smaller than last year. According to Cees, the cost of petrol, among other things, has shot up too.

When it comes to onion imports, Staay Food Group focuses solely on the Egyptian red onions. "The Dutch season has been over for a while. We can go through to mid-August with red onions from Egypt", says Cees. "We offer them in 60-80mm and 80-100mm sizes."

We sell our red onions to a wide variety of clients", he says. He has noticed that cultivation in Egypt is fast becoming professional. "You can see this with the onions but also with other products. I am amazed at how the country is progressing at the moment. The climate conditions there are also excellent."
