Mexico: Tomatoes from Nuevo Leon head to Texas

The tomato that is produced in the municipality of Arramberri, Nuevo Leon, will be exported, starting this week, directly to Pharr, Texas, under the Sandia Valley brand.

The greenhouse, which is known as the FIDESUR-Watermelon Horticultural Technopark, produces 9,000 tons per year.

Almost 70% of that production will be sent to the United States in boxes of 11.5 kilograms, stated the delegation of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food (Sagarpa).

10 years ago, members of the greenhouse association (which today numbers 112), began producing tomatoes and managed to place them in the states of Jalisco and Chihuahua, as well as in supermarkets and supply centers in the country.

The partners of the Tecnopark met with the delegate of Sagarpa in Nuevo Leon, Virgilio Bucio Reta, and with municipal authorities to present their production and commercialization plans earlier this year.

In turn, Marco Reyes GarcĂa, area director of the Trust for the development of the south of the state of Nuevo Leon (Fidesur), highlighted that this greenhouse had been able to create its own brand.

In addition, he said, tomato production generates 550 direct jobs, promotes the roots of the population and helps 16 communities surrounding the greenhouse develop.
