Ten things you never knew about tomatoes

We are now right in the middle of British Tomato Fortnight, extended from the usual Tomato Week to mark the 21st anniversary of the British Tomato Growers’ Association.
  1. Tomatoes originated in Peru where the Aztecs called them xitomatl (“plump thing with navel”).
  2. The Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes brought tomato seeds to Europe around 1550.
  3. The Europeans thought they were decorative and poisonous, so it took a long time to add them to our cuisine.
  4. French botanists called it “Lycopersicon”, meaning “Wolf peach”.
