Canary Islands shipped almost 42 million kilos

Spain's banana imports down by 4 million kilos in March

In March 2018, 41,750 tonnes of bananas were shipped from the Canary Islands, while imports, mainly from Africa and Latin America, amounted to 27,792 tonnes. Meanwhile, re-exports stood at 9,558 tonnes, so Spanish consumers had access to some 59.985 tonnes of bananas, which is a return to the usual supply levels. With these figures, the market share of imported bananas in March ranged from a minimum of 30% to a maximum of 46% of the total supply available in Spain.

The main suppliers of imported bananas in March were Costa Rica, with 10,359 tonnes, Ivory Coast with 5,292 tonnes, and Colombia, with 4,095 tonnes. Together, these three countries accounted for 71% of the total volume.

So far in 2018, shipments from the Canary Islands amount to 114.904 tonnes; imports, mainly from Africa and Latin America, have reached 76,366 tonnes, and the total volume re-exported stands at 26,549 tonnes, so the total has reached 164,722 tonnes; 4,001 more than in the same period of 2017. The cumulative market share of imported bananas has ranged from a minimum of 30% to a maximum of 46%.

The main suppliers of imported bananas so far this year have been Costa Rica, with 27,569 tonnes, Ivory Coast, with 13,536 tonnes, Colombia, with 10,148 tonnes, and France, with 8,453 tonnes. Together, these four countries account for 78% of the total volume.
