Price on the low side

China: Pineapples all enter the market at the same time

The overall price of pineapples showed a downward trend last week. The reasons for this development are as follows:

1. Natural disasters. The pineapple supply last week primarily came from Guangdong. Earlier this year Guangdong pineapple plantations suffered from a cold spell and the production significantly decreased as a result of frost damage. However, the price did not increase but dropped instead. This is because the product quality of pineapples also suffered and they became difficult to sell.

2. Fierce competition. The cold spell also delayed the appearance of pineapples on the market. Since many varieties of summer fruit enter the market around this time, competition became more fierce. The price of watermelons and muskmelons was relatively low last week and the sales volume was great. The pineapples were relatively small this year and did not endure storage well, so it was difficult to compete with melons on the market. The price of pineapples went down as a result of this competition.

3. Transport costs decreased. The market conditions for pineapples are not great and many traders are unwilling to participate in the pineapple trade. Fruit farmers are directly transporting pineapples to consumers to avoid the harvest wasting away in the plantation.
