Turkey: Pesticide training given to growers in Cine

25 growers in Cine, Aydin, a city in southwest Turkey, have been given training about the use of pesticides to prevent diseases. The growers were mostly cherry and olive growers and the training focused on diseases in these particular products.

The growers were given a handbook filled with relevant information about diseases at the end of the training. Furthermore pheromone traps used in monitoring the timing to take measures to prevent cherry fruit fly were set up in the orchards.

Cherry fruit fly drives down the market value of the fruit by causing them to drop to the ground much earlier. Detailed information was available about cherry fruit fly damage rates and when the flies start to appear - usually after rain and when the temperature rises to 16 – 18 degrees. The use of pesticides should take place within a week of the fly’s appearance. Occasionally a second application of pesticides might be necessary depending on the harvest time and the number of flies present.
