Summer leek season starts

Almost all vegetables have experienced a delay. These delays were caused by the spring frost. Young vegetables are now gradually becoming available. The switch to new leeks has also begun. Last week Peelland Agro started harvesting their young plants. These will be supplied from this week onward.

Peelland Agro, based in the Netherlands, specialises in leek cultivation. "These leek plants were germinated in Morocco. In March they were planted out in the Netherlands, where they continued to grow. They now weigh between 200 and 250 grammes each. This is a good weight at which to start harvesting them", says Susan van Horssen, Senior Account Manager of the growers association, Fossa Eugenia. Peelland Agro is affiliated with them.

The market can, therefore, switch to fresh, green summer leeks. The winter leeks had a reasonable season regarding price formation. Their season is now coming to an end. "The winter leeks that are still available are getting worn out. Their quality is deteriorating, especially with the recent warm weather", says Susan. Depending on demand, the price of young leeks is around EUR 1.20 per kg. This price corresponds to the levels on Belgian auctions.

Peelland Agro's leeks can be custom-packed. Fossa Eugenia usually supplies leeks in pool bins, crates, wooden crates, boxes, bushels, and bags. Small retail packs are also available. Different lengths of leeks are available per request.
