China: Market share of Chaozhou tangerine is shrinking

"The Chaozhou tangerine is one of the famous fruit products of the Chaoshan area. It is also the main ingredient in many local dishes. Chaozhou tangerines have a long cultivation history in Chaoshan, more than 1300 years up until now. In recent years, however, the market share of Chaozhou tangerines has been shrinking. This is a cause for concern for many people." This is according to Mr. Huang Hancheng, tangerine orchard owner and tangerine retailer.

"There are three varieties of Chaozhou tangerine: Jiao tangerine, Pengtong tangerine, and Xue tangerine. The most famous of these is the Pengtong tangerine. It is the largest and highest-quality tangerine among all Chinese tangerines. It is normally transplanted between September and November, after the autumn harvest has ripened, or before the new growth begins in spring, between February and March."

"The Chaozhou tangerine, however, only has one harvest per year and planting Chaozhou tangerines is quite difficult. The management cost is high and the survival rate of the fruit is low. This has caused many orchard owners to give up on Chaozhou tangerines. These developments also caused a continuous price increase in the last few years."
