Rick Mengers, ZON:
"Two weather peaks killed asparagus market"
The asparagus market has had to deal with low prices in recent weeks. "For now the supply is around 1% higher than last year, so volume wise the larger supply isn't so bad, but due to two warm weather peaks a lot of asparagus was available at the same time. There was no cooler period between those weather peaks, which killed the market," says asparagus seller Rick Mengers of ZON.
"Once the market is in the gutter, it's hard to get out. Many growers have already stopped as it isn't profitable to continue. The auction prices for 'double A' asparagus are very unsatisfying," continues Rick. He doesn't rule out a revival in price later in the season. "The question is when it will happen. But if the market is empty, those last weeks could be profitable."
Last year ZON and Teboza introduced the quality label 'Echte Limburgse Asperges' (Real Limburg Asparagus). A logo, special covering sheets and printed trucks ensure brand awareness in the consumer. "We also can't complain about the demand from supermarkets this season. Catering has also been buying a good amount of asparagus, but export is difficult at the moment," concludes Rick.
