Rare revival in organic farming: 500 new Finnish organic growers

There is an ever-increasing demand for organic cultivation in Finland. This has resulted in the most substantial growth in this sector in 20 years. This year, an eighth of all agricultural land is earmarked for organic farming. This is according to Evira, the Finnish Food Safety Authority.

The demand for organic products is increasing by about ten percent annually. No wonder then that, this year, 500 Finnish farmers have switched to organic farming. They are mostly from the western part of the country. With this, the number of organic agricultural companies has grown by about nine percent.

There are not only more organic growers. The size of the businesses is also increasing. This year, an organic farm comprises, on average, of 58 hectares of agricultural land. Compared to the previous year, this is an increase of almost 2 hectares. In total, more than 290 000 hectares is now being organically cultivated. This is being done by 5,100 farmers. That is almost 33,000 hectares more than last year. It equates to almost an eighth of the available agricultural land in Finland.
