Cedric Geens, W. Jonckheere

"“It is perfect weather for selling summer fruit"

"We received good volumes of Spanish cherries, so we kicked off the season with these", says Cedric Geens of Belgian fresh produce importer, W. Jonckheere. "The variety is okay, and the quality is good. The weather has been good in Spain recently. This was beneficial for the cherries." Cherry prices are between EUR4 and EUR8, depending on the size.

The apricot season has also begun. "There was a large supply of early varieties. Their taste has not yet reached its peak. They were, however, well-received because of the weather. The recent warm weather in Belgium and the Netherlands is ensuring high consumption", says Cedric. Apricot prices are at the EUR1 to EUR1,80 level. Again, depending on their size.

"Spain had a good winter, albeit cold and damp. The weather there has been warm again for about two months. This is good for fruit cultivation. I expect that, if everything remains as is, there should be an excellent fruit production. Cherries are, however, a fragile product. A cloudburst can bring the season to an abrupt halt. The delayed summer fruit is not a problem. The weather is now perfect for sales. It could not be better" concludes Cedric.
