Foreign white onions
Producer Marco Tugnoli owns around 3 hectares of early onions. "We will start harvesting over the next few days. Quantities don't seem high, but it's normal for early varieties. Quality seems good and prices finally seem to be higher."
The winter season fluctuated a lot, with temperatures above average in January, followed by a cold front and a very warm April. Plants suffered, thus affecting quantities.
The little produce available on the market comes from abroad. Retailers should welcome the first domestic productions and promote them with consumers.
Trader Davide Marmocchi confirms that, lately, onions from Australia, Mexico and India could be found on the market. Quality was excellent, but quantities have now ended. Prices risk going up.
"The early domestic product still has to become available. It is usually rather pale and doesn't catch the attention of consumers, who are used to golden onions. We're hoping for quality to be good so as to make a fair profit."
