Too large a supply of strawberries and asparagus for Pentecost

The sunny and warm weather has led to a large surplus of asparagus and strawberries in southern Hesse. "We are somewhat overwhelmed by the yields; there is currently too much asparagus in Germany," said Rolf Meinhardt from Work Group asparagus South Hesse of the Germans Press Agency.

And this royal vegetable is sold cheaply as well, with under 10 euros per kilo in commercial class I. "For asparagus growers this will be a difficult year." Because in your local supermarket you sometimes have to pay less than 3 euros for a kilo.

Strawberries have truly exploded onto the market as well. "If we could pick them all, it would be a record year," said Meinhardt who is a strawberry farmer as well. "We can barely cope with the manpower we have." Some of the smaller fruits will probably remain on the plants. A 500 gram tray currently costs between €2.40 and 3.00.

Asparagus had all the time in the world to grow perfectly, because in the beds there were temperatures of around 20 degrees Celsius all the time. "The icy saints failed to bring in the last cold. What little rain fell in the last few days does not matter, because it remained warm. "It is now peak harvest time for strawberries and they have had enough sun to have plenty of sugar.
