"We recorded a 30% drop in production for early cultivars, Bigarreau in particular, due to the frost in late February-early March. Grades have been rather small, while the market traditionally prefers large fruits. We're hoping Giorgia and Ferrovia will set things straight, so as to meet the needs of the traditional markets with 28+ and 30+ fruits as well as retailers, which usually work with 500 g punnets with grades 22+ and 24 +."
The first considerable exports of Giorgia and Ferrovia started on 18th May. "Austria and Germany mainly require 500 gram punnets with grades 22+ or 24+, 5 kg carry bags with 26+ cherries and, more rarely, 400 gram trays with 28+ for the premium range."
The fruit is also exported to Switzerland and the Netherlands. "The foreign market is more focused on grades and tends to prefer large to very-large fruits. As for Italy, medium grades are also popular, as consumers tend to focus more on variety and quality/flavour."
New packaging
"We have developed a new 200 gram PET cube for high-end Giorgia and Ferrovia cherries. The packet can be placed under running water to wash the fruit."
