“Trust in online buying increasing”

Industrial Auctions is an online auctioneer specialised in business-to-business auctioning of machines, inventory and goods in the food and drink industry. The auctioneering firm has noticed efficiency and hygiene are high on the list of priorities of production companies.

Complete companies, production lines and machines can be auctioned by Industrial Auctions. “We have three types of customers,” John van Berlo mentions. “A curator, a trader and a production company. We auction off many production companies in particular. This could involve companies that close a production location or companies that invest in new machinery.” The marketing employee says Industrial Auctions is also interesting to this companies regarding the buying of machines.

After the auctioneer’s has received an order, a project leader visits the location to make an inventory of the machines and goods that are to be auctioned off. Provided with technical company descriptions and photographs, these are placed online in lots. John explains the average auction lasts two to three weeks. The auctions are announced in advance to interest potential buyers. “We also organise one or more view days on site. Visitors are given brochures containing all of the information about the machines, inventory and goods on offer. Employees are available as well for guidance and advise. During the auction, interested parties can always ask questions per phone or e-mail. It usually only really gets going near the closing of the auction. We recommend not waiting until the last moment to make a bid, in order to prevent missing out on lots. Yet we’ve seen many buyers making their bids in the last few days. It’s still a game, and the highest bidder gets the lot.”

Quick availability is an advantage
When asked about the advantages of buying via auction, John answers costs and quick availability play an important part. A used machine is cheaper than a new one, and besides, it can be picked up within a week after the auction. “We can’t give any guarantees, but by informing the customer before the auction about the state of the machine, and by always being ready to answer questions, we try to serve them as well as possible.”

According to him, the same is naturally also true for the customers. Industrial Auctions has gained much knowledge about the food and drink industry over the years. “It’s not easy for companies to sell a complete line, or even a complete factory, never mind reaching such a wide clientele. We take care of everything for them, from doing the inventory to the completion of the auction. During pick-up days, we’re available to help load the bought machines, inventory and goods onto the lorries, and we can even take care of transport globally.” John mentions aspects such as efficiency and hygiene are currently important points of attention for production companies.

Number of auctions increased
The platform for auctions in the food and drink industry has auctions at locations throughout Europe, and an extensive global network. Besides auctions on site with customers, Industrial Auctions organises five or six auctions at their own location in Eindhoven per year. Because of this, the auctioneer can also serve smaller companies. People buying online more easily is part of the good development of the auctioneering firm. This is also evident due to the increasing number of auctions. Although Industrial Auctions started with two auctions per month, they now have multiple auctions per week. “Besides, we’ve also noticed much can still be automated globally. This gives us confidence for the future.”
