China began industrial cultivation of raspberry varieties in the 1920's and 30's. After many years of development, China now has several businesses involved in the processing of raspberries. However, it is still not a common industry throughout the country. There are four main areas of raspberry product development in China: fresh fruit, processed fruit juice, refrigerated fruit, and jams or wines. There is still much room for development in the raspberry industry in China.

"The raspberry industry is distributed over a wide area. The main production areas are in Yunnan, Jiangsu, Jilin, Liaoning, and Qinghai. In our opinion the production in Qinghai is visibly superior to production in Yunnan. Qinghai production occupies more land, has a larger production volume, and is better able to satisfy market demand." This is according to Mr. Su of Shanghai Huoda Specialized Fruit and Vegetable Cooperation.

"The market potential of raspberries on the fresh fruit market is great, but currently the raspberry market is upside down. This development is mainly because raspberries can only be stored 3-5 days at 0-4 degrees Celsius, and so the quality is difficult to guarantee. The best method is to have raspberry plantations near the market. The market for refrigerated raspberries, however, is great and maintains strong market demand."
