China: Why did the price of Orah mandarins decrease?

In recent years, Guangxi Province has presented new fruit varieties one after another. The most noticeable one among the new citrus fruits is the Orah mandarin. In 2012, Guangxi imported 80,000 Orah seeds for planting. In 2014, the first fruits ripened. Each hectare of land has brought 45,000 kg of mandarins with the value of about 525-600 thousand yuan. Because Orah mandarins look great, have a first-rate quality and are easy to store, their price at Nanning fruit markets can reach 40 yuan per kilogram.

Probably because of the longer market season, the price of Orah mandarins decreased this year. In December 2017, Sugar oranges exploded onto the markets of Guanxi, Chinese consumers were crazy about them. However, this year, the price of Sugar oranges fell by half. Many growers are not willing to sell their Sugar oranges at the lower price, so the oranges were on the market until the end of March, which is too long.

In recent years, Wuming District has been intensively developing the Orah mandarin production. In 2016, its total output in Wuming District reached 120,000 tons, and the sales revenue was over 1 billion yuan. In 2017, the planting area of Orah mandarin in Wuming District was over 20,000 ha, which makes 1/3 part of all Orah mandarin planting area of Guanxi province. Each 670 ha bring about 30,000 tons of mandarins, which is about 3.5 billion yuan.
