Honduras to make its first melon shipment to Mexico

Authorities of the National Service for Agrifood Health and Safety (SENASA) of the Secretariat of Agriculture and Livestock (SAG) confirmed that Mexico had approved the entry of Honduran melons.

This approval and official notification of the Mexican government was received by the Director General of Senasa, Ricardo Paz, who stated that this was another achievement for the Government of the Republic and the Agrolibano Company.

Honduras plans to make its first shipment of melons to the Mexican market next Wednesday, May 16. The melon to be shipped, will come from the southern part of the country and was grown in the Santa Rosa and Montelibano farms, which have been declared of the Mediterranean Fly (Moscamed).

This milestone was achieved thanks to the technical work between the Office of Admissibility and the Department of Diagnosis and Surveillance and Phytosanitary Campaigns of the General Subdirectorate of Plant Health of Senasa, Agrolibano, and the Ambassador of Honduras in Mexico, Alden Rivera.

Background
Recently a delegation of the National Service of Health Food Safety and Quality (Senasica) of Mexico, which was headed by Guillermo Santiago Martinez, the Director of Plant Health Regulation, was in the country conducting an official audit; a final requirement to approve the admissibility of Honduran melon.

Mexico joins other markets that already consume the Honduran melon such as Japan, Taiwan, the United States, and Central America. The country's authorities are working to export this fruit to Korea.
